Heart Valve Surgery: Repair and Replacement

Heart and blood vessel disease — cardiovascular disease also called Heart disease — includes numerous problems, many of which are related to a process called Atherosclerosis. Heart Valve surgery like repair and replacement is done when your heart does not work properly, there may be many reasons which may cause heart damage which may be occured from the birth time itself or it may be caused by due to improper way of life style of a person.

When heart valves don't open enough to allow the blood to flow through as it should, it's called stenosis. When the heart valves don't close properly and allow blood to leak through, it's called regurgitation.Valves controls the blood flow by making it move it in one direction through the different chambers or parts of the heart. If a valve is not working properly, blood flow is impaired.

What causes Heart Problems ??

If a valve does not close properly, blood may leak between the chambers or flow backwards, that condition which is known as valve regurgitation, insufficiency, or incompetence. If a valve is narrowed (also called stenosed), blood flow through the heart may be restricted.

If the valve problem is minor, it may be treated with medication. But if the heart valve damage is severe, a procedure may be required to repair or replace the malfunctioning valve.

Heart Valve Repair or Replacement may be required if the valve gets damaged by:

• Endocarditis (Infection).
• Heart defect due to Congenital.
• Rheumatic heart disease.
• Aortic and/or Mitral valve disease.
• Normal aging and wear.

Minimally Invasive Valve Surgery

Minimally invasive Repair or Replacement surgery does not involve sawing through the breastbone and opening the chest. The surgeon watches the heart on a video screen and operates using long-handled surgical tools inserted through small incisions. In some cases, robotic arms are used, which are also known as Endoscopic or Robotic Heart Surgery.

Valve Repair

Heart Valve Repair is generally a preferred method for treating a diseased heart valve, because the valves may be too badly damaged. Every patient's condition is unique, and each doctor has a unique approach to treatment. The doctor will determine if heart valve repair surgery is the best treatment for your particular condition.There are two way by which Heart Valve Repair can be done they are :

• Non-surgical valve repair

Valve Replacement

Heart Valve Replacement is more commonly used to treat aortic valves or severely damaged mitral valves. There are two kinds of valves that are used for valve replacement they are :

Mechanical valves : which are made from durable metals, carbon, ceramics and plastics.

Biological valves : which are made from Animal tissue, patient’s own tissues (an autograft).

There are mainly two ways the Valve Replacement Surgery can be done they are :
